What are the five elements? 五行

Chinese astrology describes the world through five moving energies — the wu xing. They feed one another in a cycle: Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, and Water grows Wood. A balanced chart holds a little of each; most of us lean hard on one and run low on another.

What is BaZi — the Four Pillars of Destiny?

BaZi (八字, “eight characters”) is the classical Chinese astrology birth chart, used for over a thousand years. The moment you were born is written as four pillars — year, month, day, and hour — each a pair of characters, and every character carries one of the five elements.

This page introduces the traditional ideas behind BaZi. Personal chart calculations and recommendations are not available yet.

How to read your five-element chart

  1. 1

Find your dominant element. The energy your chart leans on — it colors how you move through the world.

  2. 2

Find your missing element. The quality your chart runs low on. In feng shui, this is the one worth inviting back in.

  3. 3

Restore the balance. Tradition pairs each element with natural crystals. Wear your missing element as a daily reminder.

Beyond missing elements — favorable elements 喜用神 & luck cycles 大运

Classical BaZi goes one step past counting. It first reads the strength of your day master — the stem of your day pillar, the character that stands for you. The season of your birth month, the roots hidden inside your branches, and the visible stems standing beside you each lend support or drain it. A weak day master wants feeding — its resource and companion elements; a strong one wants tempering — the elements it controls and flows into. The element this method points to is your favorable element, the yong shen, and it is not always the one you lack.

Decade luck cycles (da yun) describe ten-year chapters in traditional readings. This site does not currently calculate personal cycles or collect birth details.

Five-element reading FAQ

What is BaZi (八字)?+

BaZi — also called the Four Pillars of Destiny — is the traditional Chinese birth chart. Your birth year, month, day, and hour each form a pillar of two characters, eight in total, and every character carries one of the five elements. Counting those elements reveals your personal balance: which energy dominates your chart and which one is missing.

What are the five Chinese elements?+

The five elements of Chinese astrology and feng shui — wu xing (五行) — are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. They are phases of energy rather than materials: Wood is growth, Fire is passion, Earth is stability, Metal is clarity, and Water is wisdom. Each also corresponds to a season, a direction, and a family of colors and crystals.

What element am I?+

Personal readings are not available on this site yet. This page introduces the five elements as a cultural and design reference.

Do I need to know my birth time?+

No. Your birth date alone casts three of the four pillars, which is enough for a meaningful reading. If you do know the hour, it adds the fourth pillar and sharpens the balance.

Is my element the same as my Chinese zodiac animal?+

They’re related but not the same. Your zodiac animal comes from your birth year alone, while your five-element chart reads the full BaZi — year, month, day, and hour — so two people with the same animal can have very different element balances.

How do crystals relate to the five elements?+

The feng shui tradition groups natural crystals by element — green stones with Wood, red with Fire, and so on. A bracelet built around your missing element is worn as a daily reminder of the quality you’re inviting in. It’s a tradition and a design language, not a medical claim.

What is a favorable element (yong shen)?+

The favorable element — yong shen (用神) — is the element a classical reading says your chart benefits from most. It comes from judging your day master’s strength: a weak day master favors the elements that feed it, a strong one favors the elements that temper it. That’s why the favorable element isn’t always the one you lack.

What are decade luck cycles (da yun)?+

Da yun (大运) are the ten-year cycles of a BaZi chart. Starting from an age set by your birth moment, each decade carries its own stem-and-branch pair — its own elemental flavor. Traditional readers use them as a rhythm of life’s chapters. Personal calculations are not available here yet.
